Almost three-quarters of new jobs in Canada will require a postsecondary education credential. While enrolments   at Ontario’s colleges and universities are at record levels, certain socio-economic groups are under-represented in the postsecondary system – among them low-income, Aboriginal, first-generation (where neither parent has attended a postsecondary institution) and persons with disabilities.

HEQCO research is particularly focused on

  • whether students from these under-represented groups access and complete higher education in appropriate numbers and, if not,
  • what strategies will increase their participation and maximize the probability that they will graduate.

  • Parental education may be the most important determinant of who pursues PSE
  •  Students from under-represented groups are more reluctant to take out loans for school
  •   Only 50 per cent of lowest income full-time university students applied to OSAP in 2007-08
